How to Use Humor to Engage Viewers often depends on who’s in your video.

I was fortunate because just that person was slated to appear in my video for the Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas/Irving.  He’s David Feherty, a former professional golfer on the European and PGA tours.  He’s now a broadcaster with CBS Sports and the Golf Channel.  As you look at this video I shot several years ago, notice how Feherty closes out the promo.

My advice:

  • If you’re looking for humor to engage viewers in a video, try to find someone who’s naturally amusing.  Or at least entertaining.
  • Guide them, but let them be themselves.
  • Don’t go overboard with humor.  Sometimes just one line in a short video works well.
  • Know your audience to be sure how appropriate the humor humor.  Otherwise, the joke can be on you.

Also, take advantage of opportunities to use amusing video.  But only if it helps you make your point.  With no shortage of funny YouTube videos, for example, you need to make sure your message isn’t obscured by silliness.

As a side note, David Feherty is a fascinating person with a past that isn’t funny at all.  Search for his name, if you’re interested in learning more.
