How to Reveal Your Human Side

People love authenticity.  They like to see your human side.  So if your reputation could benefit from revealing the “real you,” look for opportunities.

That’s exactly what President Obama did by appearing on “Running Wild with Bear Grylls.”  As you’ll see from the video, the questions focused on his “softer side.”  No tough questions.  To make this work, it helps to find an interviewer who appreciates you.  A person committed to bringing out the best you have to offer.

“That’s incredible,” is an example of just one response.  You won’t get this from a hard-hitting reporter, but it’s perfectly appropriate for a featured profile.

The show was filmed back in September during Obama’s three-day trip to Alaska that was designed to drum up some attention for the climate cause. Despite the title, though, Obama didn’t “run wild” as much as he “enjoyed a pleasant conversation and snack” with Grylls, a former Special Forces soldier-turned-celebrity survivalist.

Environment and Fatherhood

The two men talked about the environment and fatherhood.  That was along with flatulence, belly button lint, and drinking one’s own urine (which Obama smartly declined to do).  He also ate some salmon that had been previously gnawed on by an actual bear.  One writer noted “The whole thing was quietly charming, in a geeky father in the woods-type way.”

How to Reveal Your Human Side:  Takeaways

  • Find an environment allowing you to show your human side.
  • Ensure the interviewer or producer is committed to showing you in the best possible way.
  • Direct the conversation to subjects like family, kids, or hobbies that bring out your personality — like the joy of being a dad.
  • Even though you’re trying to show your human side, aim to get your messages across
