How to Empower Children is the subject of a video produced by Primrose Schools USA. You can learn a lot from what worked and what approaches can improve the storytelling and engagement.
Their YouTube channel video asks:
“How do we empower children to reach their full potential? By combining research-informed methods with modern wisdom, our Balanced Learning curriculum nurtures Active Minds, Healthy Bodies and Happy Hearts®. Watch to learn more.”
Here’s my take based on three decades of researching how viewers respond to video storytelling as well as teaching the concept to video journalists across the country and abroad:
Overall, the video was well done in that it:
- Explained the concept of Balanced Learning® in clear language.
- Showed lots of video of the kids, teachers, and activities.
- Included a variety of shots, including close-ups, to immerse the viewer.
- Was technically sound. Obviously talented professionals shot and produced it.
How to Empower Children — How to raise the bar on video storytelling:
- Take the sound up full of sections so viewers can hear the singing and activities. Imagine the power of that approach.
- Ask interviewees to talk directly at the camera, rather than to the side. They don’t connect as well looking off-camera.
- Leverage the power of storytelling.
- Illustrate a mini-story of one of the youngsters, showing the unique value of Primrose Schools programs.
- For example, a very short soundbite from a teacher, then a student reacting positively through show-and-tell can make the point.
Regarding the importance of “putting a face on the story”: We’ve produced videos for other private schools. The response by parents was greatest when we showed the story of one of the youngsters. In short, viewers valued the story rather than just hearing teachers talk about it. It was a story they could share with others. That’s compared to just a series of educator soundbites and a lot of video of kids.
